Betsayda Machado @ World Music Collider! Betsayda Machado + Kotoko Brass in Williamsburg, MA

World Music Collider! Betsayda Machado + Kotoko Brass, Williamsburg, MA

It's time for another Collider!!! CHOQUE NUMERO DOS! This one is going to be a real treat. Betsayda Machado, the heralded new queen of Venezuelan Afro-Soul, is coming to the Williamsburg Grange. Her band, La Parranda El Clavo -- which includes three cocoa farming brothers, a mother and son team, and Machado's sister -- have never played in Western Mass. The reason that you've never heard of them is that they've only recently acquired visas and started touring internationally. But they have been playing together in their little village of El Clavo for over thirty years. "La Parranda" literally means party, and their music makes dancers float in the air. "The kind of group that world-music fans have always been thrilled to discover: Vital, accomplished, local, unplugged, deeply rooted" -- NY Times Jon Pareles Now here's where it gets interesting. The drums of Afro-Venezuelan music are primarily derived from West Africa. And our second performance for the evening, Kotoko Brass, will be taking us back to the Motherland. Inspired by the thunderous royal court rhythms of Ghana, Kotoko fuses the lively drum music of West Africa with the celebratory brass band sound of New Orleans and the West African brass band sound of Ghana, Benin and Nigeria. PLUS: The Peace & Rhythm DJs will be keeping it funky between sets. Bottom line: Its going to be a genuine COLLISION and an unforgettable party. This time around we're thrilled to team up with the Pioneer Valley Worker's Center, whose mission is to build power for low-wage and immigrant workers throughout Western Mass. All proceeds from the event go directly to them. Get your tickets early!! Space in the Grange is limited and judging by last year's Collider, this show will sell out. NOTES: Kids under 12 do not need a ticket. Handicapped access not available at the Grange, unfortunately :(
